Its origins date back to the 1st century AD, when it was built during Roman times as a defensive outpost.

The castle occupies a strategic position on a rocky hill at the meeting point of the Maòr Stream and Rui Stream, making it an important stronghold for defending the valley. Over the centuries, the fortress played a key role during the barbarian invasions and throughout the Middle Ages.

Olt de l'Arc

The Arch Sculpted by Nature

Olt de l'Arc: The Arch Sculpted by Nature

The remarkable Olt de l'Arc, also known as Pont Val d'Arc, is a stunning natural rock arch hidden deep within the forests of the Belluno Prealps. This fascinating geological formation lies right on the border between the provinces of Belluno and Treviso — a boundary officially defined in 1838 after centuries of disputes between the villages of Mel and Miane.

Over time, wind, water and natural erosion sculpted this impressive limestone arch, creating a unique rock formation surrounded by beautiful beech forests. Even after centuries of weathering, the arch still holds a mysterious charm that fascinates young explorers and nature-loving families.

The Loop Trail

The arch can be reached on foot from Rifugio Boz or from Praderadego Pass. These hiking routes range from easy to moderate difficulty and are suitable for families with children who enjoy walking in nature.

For families looking for a longer adventure, a scenic 12 km circular hiking route starts at Rifugio Boz. The trail first climbs toward Malga Canidi, then continues to the spectacular Olt de l'Arc before returning to the refuge along a peaceful forest path.

Along the way, hikers are surrounded by the scents of moss and woodland, while the forest reveals its quiet beauty through changing colours, sounds and hidden clearings. These peaceful mountain trails remain relatively undiscovered, creating a magical atmosphere where it feels as though time has stood still.

A True Nature Experience

Although the peaks of the Dolomiti Bellunesi remain hidden beyond the trees, the forest itself offers a wonderful nature experience. Among ancient beech trees and open clearings, children can let their imagination run free — inventing stories of knights, woodland animals and forgotten legends.

The trail requires some attention, as it mostly follows woodland paths along the hillside. It’s important to follow the trail markers carefully and maintain a good sense of direction, especially for families less familiar with mountain hiking.

At the end of the walk, the sense of discovery is unforgettable. You will have explored a hidden corner of wild nature and enjoyed one of the most memorable family hiking adventures near Mel and the Belluno Prealps.

Wear comfortable, non-slip hiking shoes and bring a light backpack with water, energy snacks and a waterproof jacket in case the mountain weather changes. Take regular breaks to enjoy the forest and let children explore safely — collecting leaves, spotting animal tracks and listening to the sounds of nature can make the adventure even more magical.

The Trail from Monte Foral

Starting from the car park at Monte Foral, the hike to Monte Crep is about 10 km round trip. The trail begins along a gentle forest road crossing wide meadows with beautiful views over the Valbelluna and the peaks of the Dolomiti Bellunesi. In spring, these meadows are famous for their blooming wild narcissus flowers — a magical sight for children and nature lovers.

The path then enters the peaceful forest of Monte Foral before opening again near the summit. Along the way you will reach Malga Mont, a traditional alpine hut where families can sometimes stop to taste local mountain specialities. From there, the trail continues gently to the summit of Monte Crep.

From the top, the 360° panorama is breathtaking. The entire Valbelluna stretches below, surrounded by the Dolomiti Bellunesi and the Belluno Prealps. On clear days you can even see Monte Visentin and the distant Venetian Plain stretching toward Venice — a view that makes this hike a truly memorable family mountain experience.

For the return, you can follow the same path or take a near-loop route via Casa del Guardian, adding around 2–3 km but offering even more scenic viewpoints along the way.

Always choose hiking routes suitable for your children’s age and ability. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water, energy snacks and a waterproof jacket in case the mountain weather changes.
